Hi! I’m Kate! Welcome to Living that Debt Free Life! I am so happy you are here!
My husband and I are on a mission to pay off SIX FIGURES of student loan debt—all mine. (Sorry, babe!) Our debt free journey is a long story, but suffice it to say we made a plan in 2017 to try to get the $105K of student loan debt paid ASAP. Our initial plan was to throw $1,000 extra to the debt every month. While noble, at that rate, we still wouldn’t be debt free for another 6 years, and that was just too long for me to stomach. We decided we would—somehow—pay the debt off in half the time, and I devised a 3-year plan, based on Dave Ramsey’s baby steps.
In 2017, we half-heartedly worked the plan and paid off $17K worth of debt. We kicked it in to high gear in 2018, and paid off a total of $47K in student loans and another $21K to the mortgage, for a total of $68K to debt that year. (Full Disclosure: I didn’t even bring home $68K net in salary in 2018!) When you add in the hubs’ income, we sent about 53% of our regular salaries to debt in 2018.
In 2019, we finished paying off all our non-mortgage debt and became debt free!
A little more about us: We have been married for 8 years and have a 8-year old son. Our family also includes a 20-year-old step son, who is living at home with us while going to community college (being cash flowed by us, thank you very much, while we still attempt to tackle this debt).
